Granulite Facies Metamorphism

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, Universityof Wisconsin - Green Bay

Upper Amphibolite Facies 600 C

Ca 600. Hydrous phases include amphiboles and micas.

680 C

Ca 680. Muscovite disappears

700 - 750 C

Ca 700. All the amphiboles break down and are replaced by pyroxenes.

The only hydrous phase left is biotite.

Ca 750. Foreshadowing what will happen during eclogite formation, the compatibility domain of anorthite begins to shrink. In the previous figure anorthite was compatible with everything. Here, anorthite + hypersthene react to make diopside + almandine.
